On July 31, 1938, a meeting was held to discuss the re-establishing of Mt. Zion as a church. On a Sunday in January of 1939, a second meeting was held, and Mt. Zion was re-organized. A motion was made and seconded for Mt. Zion to retain its name and services to continue. During this time, Mt. Zion only consisted of a few members and as time passed, the congregation grew.
By 1940, the re-established Mt. Zion, made it’s first move to purchase the property at 15354 8th Avenue, with a little house becoming Mt. Zion’s new church home.
On May 28, 1946, Deacon Allen T. Sanders was called to the ministry. On August 2, 1947, Rev. A. T. Sanders was elected as pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with a membership consisting of nineteen members and continued to grow.
On July 11, 1954, Mt. Zion moved from the little church in the back into the edifice. On August 18, 1957, the corner stone was laid. God was in the plan and by his grace we have come along way.
One of our oldest continued members is still with us today: SIS. INEZ WATKINS
On August 29, 1982, God called Rev. Sanders home to be with the Lord. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant…..Enter into the joy of the Lord.”
In May of 1983, Rev. Edward L. Jones was elected Pastor of Mt. Zion, and under his leadership we are continuing to progress. As of this date, Mt. Zion consists of 3 Associate Ministers, a Deacon Board consisting of 6 Deacons, a Mothers Board consisting of 4 Mothers and 11 auxiliaries.
We have purchased lots North of this building (paved and enclosed with a fenced parking lot), a copier machine, installed new windows, remodeled our kitchen and men and women facilities, and organized the Structural Improvement and Beautification Oversight Committee.
Under our Pastor’s leadership, God has allowed us to embark on a new journey. With the help of the Lord and prayer, we have put into work a plan to build a new church.
