Evans Community Church was organized and established by Rev. James P. Holt, who was actively associated with Cosmopolitan Community Church of Chicago under Dr. Mary Evans. He was invited out to preach in one of the churches in the community. After walking in the boots through the mud to get to the church, he was told upon his arrival that his invitation was cancelled so that their visiting presiding Elder could preach.
Shortly afterwards, Evans Community Church was founded and meetings were held on Fourth Avenue in the home of Sister Chizon. Prior to 1951, the church moved to Eighth Avenue in the home of Sister Kirklin. The church later moved to the basement of the home of Brother Edward Moore. The next move was to the old Savoy Building on Fourth Avenue. Finally, on September 30, 1956, our present church home, located here on the corner of 153rd Street & 5th Avenue, was completed and dedicated.
Before building the present edifice, the church met to incorporate and the trustees were: Junior Clark, Arnett Pierce, Edward Moore, Hattie Haynes, and Helen W. Holt. Rev. Holt served as Pastor and Chairman of the Trustee Board. Affidavits of the Incorporation as a religious corporation in Phoenix, Illinois were later submitted and recorded in the Office of the Recorder of Deeds in Cook County, Illinois.
A number of Ministers served faithfull for an extended period of time in the pulpit ministry: Rev. J.P. Holt, organizing pastor, Rev. Alexander Lawrence, Rev. Brock, Rev. Bonnie Monroe, Rev. Tyrone W. Coleman (our current pastor), Rev. Geophrey Harris, Rev. James Deramus, Rev. Michael Terrell, served as Associate Ministers along with our current Associate Ministers – Min. Michael Wheatley, Min. Reginald Poindexter and Rev. Eugene Travis.
Like the song writer so boldly proclaimed, words which Evans Community can joyously refrain:
“The church of God is marching
I shall not be moved,
Just like a tree, planted by the water,
I shall not be moved.”
